Time to Talk Climate

There was a time when climate articles were a bit hard to come by. The last issue of Science Magazine, the publication of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, had three. The last two issues of the small ScienceNews magazine had six. Some are informational and some are disturbing. One review started like this, “We urgently need international agreements to decrease future global CO2 emissions as well as government policies to mitigate existing local threats. Countries need to prioritize science-based mitigation and adaptation solutions…” or in another, “Political action must now follow in order to slow or mitigate these rates of global change.”   Science studies are piling up as scientists watch ecosystems pushed to their limits. Bee populations are in steep decline. One article estimates the number of wild bee species is down from 6,700 in 1950 to 3,400 in 2010.    Another documents marine heat killing kelp forests. And yet another article docu...

Climate Baseline Information

One-minute and one book for the kids. After witnessing the melting Alaskan Glaciers six years ago I started to research climate change. In so doing, I recognized I needed to discern what is a reputable science organization.   I investigated many science organizations, (see partial list at the end of this entry), and I found no reputable science organizations that dispute the earth is warming and humans are responsible. I leaned to the National Academies of Science world-wide. These are generally self-governing non-governmental societies whose prestigious members review current science to create sound advice for public use. The Royal Society is the oldest academy founded in 1660 and our US Academy founded in 1863 by congress and Abe Lincoln is arguably the most prestigious in the world.   The Royal Society and the National Academy had, in 2014, partnered to make a 100 second video. Here it is. It was correct in 2014 and the warming and the resulting extreme weather since...
