Brainwashing

First a request. I could use feedback. Recently, I was accused of “brainwashing”. You may think this type of feedback would not be welcome. This comment was appreciated because critical comments are an opportunity for me to re-examine my sources, my motivations, and to learn your concerns.

Brainwashing is an interesting thing to be accused of. I think back to pertinent movies like the Manchurian Candidate. The Manchurian Candidate is both a novel and a movie. It is a political thriller about the son of a prominent U.S. political family who is brainwashed into being an unwitting assassin for a foreign conspiracy.

Given the fact we have been targeted by the Russians for societal brainwashing, this exciting movie might be a good place to start learning a bit about it.

In my opinion, brainwashing should incorporate at least three elements. One, it must have an evil motive.  Second, the content of the brainwashing message must contain lies, or be constructed in such a way to deceive. Third, it requires a brilliant brainwasher.

If element one and two do not eliminate me, the third element certainly does.

The science of climate change encompasses a vast field of knowledge. In any column I could be in error. Please bring any error to my attention or address it in a letter to the editor. I am proud of my extensive work to understand climate change and if there are errors, I want to correct them. Since I diligently search out truth, I like to think of my work as educational rather than brainwashing.

All reputable science organizations I know of have moved past, “Is it happening?”, or “Is it caused by humans?”, or, “Are there fixes?”. The answer to all three of these questions is “Yes”.  But, often the information has not properly filtered down to us. Thus, any question you have is a great question.

People have called and e-mailed me and I have always taken the time to send information or links to reputable science organizations to answer their questions.

In the past, even environmental organizations have been caught flat footed. Global warming was initially perceived as a minor environmental problem. One of the last environmental organizations to embrace global warming was The Nature Conservancy. A lot of NC’s deep pocketed patrons threatened to cease funding the organization if they made a stand on the “political” issue of global warming. As a science-based organization the Nature Conservancy board made the moral and science-based decision to join the fight to save the planet.

Today, the financially and morally healthy Nature Conservancy, and all environmental organizations, devote countless articles and even entire magazines to the climate science challenge.

To wind this one up, do not forget to send me questions and comments!  They are important to me because I know a logical person will have a difficult time committing himself or herself to a cause if pertinent questions are left unanswered.
