The Nature Conservancy - 221

In the noble effort to save the planet, the earth conscious voter is the most important element. From election cycle to election cycle the fight to slow and then halt climate change has moved forward in fits and starts. The ambitious Build Back Better package is stalled for now but, in the meantime, is there something we can do? For one, you could join The Nature Conservancy, (TNC). The Nature Conservancy promotes and manages resilient, diverse, and connected ecosystems which contribute to climate solutions. TNC collaborates with local landowners and governmental agencies to create a community centered approach to conservation. Their goal being thriving local economies based on healthy lands and waters. TNC employs science, economics, the wisdom of indigenous peoples, and the spirit of community involvement to leverage the power of nature to change the course of our shared future. TNC recognizes climate action is urgently needed. By conserving healthy lands and waters our nat...

The Power of Big Oil - 220

“The Power of Big Oil” is an excellent Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) documentary created by “Frontline”. One reason to watch documentaries on the abuses of Big Corporations is to fully understand a problem and obtain a historical perspective. Without understanding problems which occur, AND REOCCUR, we will continually move from tragedy to tragedy repeating the same mistakes. One of our greatest patriots, the Progressive and AntiTrust Republican President, Theodore Roosevelt, reigned in the giant corporate monopolies. The worst corporate bad actor in his day was the behemoth, “Standard Oil”. Under Roosevelt’s leadership, Standard Oil was broken up into 34 smaller companies. In 1999, two offspring of the Standard Oil breakup, Exxon and Mobil, were allowed to merge and create another monster company. This merger was the product of a society which had failed to learn from history. When we ignore history and fail to learn the lessons gleaned from great minds with purpose lik...

“Black Gold”: Exxon’s Campaign of Deception - 219

“Black Gold” is a three-part documentary you can watch for free via Paramount on a trial basis. It is a collaboration by CBS NEWS, Time Studios, and PROTOZOA. This fast-paced documentary has three top notch directors: Emmy Award Winner Gabrielle Schonder, Oscar-nominee Zach Heinzerling and Oscar-nominated director Darren Aronofsky. The first part of “Black Gold” is titled, “Apocalypse Later”. Apocalypse Later takes us back 40 years to the early 1980s when Exxon was an Energy Company doing research in wind, solar, nuclear power and petroleum engineering. Exxon eventually dropped the green energy program development and narrowed their focus to the search for, extraction, and refining of oil. Exxon, in the 80s, was a science research powerhouse whose scientists were the best in the world. They were THE cutting-edge green energy company. Additionally, they had the best scientists studying global warming/climate change. In Black Gold, you meet scientists like Ed Garvey and Marty Hofert ...

Arnold Schwarzenegger - 218

When thinking of climate science advocates, Arnold Schwarzenegger is not someone who come to mind. Yes, I recognize him as a champion bodybuilder. He won the Mr. Olympia title seven times. Yes, I recognize him as an actor. He starred in 35 films and became one of the most successful action-adventure actors ever. I also remember him as a Republican who was elected Governor of California. But, as a climate champion, he was not so recognizable to me until now. It wasn’t until I purchased the book, “39 Ways to Save the Planet” by Tom Heap did I get an inkling of Governor Schwarzenegger’s early, strong, and continuing role as a climate champion. “39 Ways to Save the Planet” was written by Tom Heap to catalog the many ways innovative, dedicated, and imaginative people are creating solutions to solve the climate crisis. Tom Heap is a documentary presenter who covers issues in science, energy, and climate for the British Broadcasting Corporation, BBC. Arnold, “I’ll be back” Schwarzenegger wr...
