The Nature Conservancy - 221

In the noble effort to save the planet, the earth conscious voter is the most important element. From election cycle to election cycle the fight to slow and then halt climate change has moved forward in fits and starts. The ambitious Build Back Better package is stalled for now but, in the meantime, is there something we can do? For one, you could join The Nature Conservancy, (TNC).

The Nature Conservancy promotes and manages resilient, diverse, and connected ecosystems which contribute to climate solutions. TNC collaborates with local landowners and governmental agencies to create a community centered approach to conservation. Their goal being thriving local economies based on healthy lands and waters.

TNC employs science, economics, the wisdom of indigenous peoples, and the spirit of community involvement to leverage the power of nature to change the course of our shared future. TNC recognizes climate action is urgently needed. By conserving healthy lands and waters our natural ecosystems continue to soak up carbon from the atmosphere

TNC is collaborating with the Pew Charitable Trust, the World Wildlife Fund and the philanthropic enterprise ZOMALAB in large scale projects worldwide. The noble effort is called “Enduring Earth”.

The goal of Enduring Earth is to protect 30% of the earth’s land and water ecosystems. This does not mean removing people from the habitat but weaving human life and the human contribution into the solutions.

Luckily governments are motivated to cooperate. The United Nations warns us if we do not protect our ecosystems aggressively, we could lose a million species by the end of the century. Nations at the Paris Climate Accord, in response to the threat, signed on to protecting 30% of the earth. While nations are committed to this bottom-line need, finding experts to make it happen are another matter. This where TNC can play a vital role.

TNC evolved out of the “Ecological Society of America” which was founded in 1915. In 1951 it was officially formed as the Nature Conservancy which today protects 119,000,000 acres of land. TNC has weathered growing pains in these 71 years ever accumulating science knowledge, management skills, and holistic ethics. Today TNC works in 70 countries. Now they face the biggest challenge ever, leading the movement to ensure an “Enduring Earth”.

For a few bucks, you can join and play a part. You may not have the opportunity to directly protect lion habitat in Kenya, or the steppes of Mongolia, but you do not have to travel far to see TNC in action. TNC has protected lands in Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Michigan. In fact, TNC has managed lands just north of us in the Keweenaw. Or you may want to visit the 10,500 acre expanse of native woodlands and free flowing streams in the Slate River Forest here in our U.P.

Membership entitles you to their inspiring magazine with one interesting article after the next. Each member gained is not only a step towards nature protected but another step towards a planet saved.
