Climate Science Explained by Doctor Rosen - 252

In the New York article titled, “The Science of Climate Change Explained: Facts, Evidence, and Proof”, Ph.D. Julia Rosen does a darn good job of describing what is going on with our planet. Doctor Rosen is a geologist. Since she is not a climate scientist, she references her sources via links. (She has 61 by my count) Referencing information is professional and, if the references are reputable, proves a writer is not intellectually lazy or a fake. Referencing your work allows diligent readers to double-check claims to assure themselves they are not being conned. With links readers can expand their understanding of important issues. I have written 251 climate columns and submitted many letters to the editor to various newspapers. I am proud to say most of my columns and letters to the editor were referenced to experts. I have even sought out busy scientists for more information and have been able to attend seminars and presentations by world respected scientists in various cl...

Staying Climate Strong - 251

Climate Scientist Michael Mann has been in the climate fight for decades as a scientist and spokesperson to governments and the public. His recent book, “The New Climate War,” is a wealth of climate history and wisdom, so I recommend it to anyone who wants to learn the past and move forward confidently. Of course, I recommend any of his books, but, The New Climate War is particularly relevant. Outright climate denialism is pretty much dead. It exists in only a few remote corners of the conservative worldview and then, usually only in the minds of old white men. Science predicted weather extremes and the steady increase of world average temperatures (the last eight years are the warmest in recorded history). These predictions have proven denialists to be either science illiterate or liars. Traditional conservative media megaphones have moved away from denial in the face of weather facts. Now the goal is to delay and demoralize. Media owned or funded by the Kochs, Mercers, Scaifes,...

Blame. Who Knew What When? 249

This fall on a warm pleasant evening I sat outside visiting my new neighbor. We were looking around grateful to live in the UP and appreciative of nature’s beauty. I guided the conversation to climate change and the problems we must deal with to protect nature and man. “You know”, he said, “your generation is the one who has done nothing, leaving us to fix this climate mess.” At 71 I am quite aware my generation, the Baby Boomer Generation, will be remembered as the generation who let the climate slide to the dire state we find it in today. It is easy to lay blame on the Baby Boomers. At one time I was very critical of my generation until I did research into psychology and propaganda. What I found was nearly everyone (me included, as I have been conned) is subject to being misled. The psychological reasons we are susceptible to a scam or to a con are many and varied. The bottom line is we easily convince ourselves of things that are not reality. We are especially vulnerable i...

The Big Ike and the Big Bill - 250

Galveston is a city of 53,695 people built on a large sand spit 49 miles downstream from Houston. This area contains the largest concentration of oil refineries in the country with 4,600 tanks used to store oil and oil products. Galveston Bay between Houston and Galveston is heavily polluted. Galveston Texas is the center of one of the larger projects conceived by man called the Ike Dike, named after the devastating hurricane. It is the third iteration of man contrived seawalls for Galveston. The city, being located on a barrier island, which is just a large sandy spit of land, is vulnerable to whatever meteorological event is brewing in the Gulf of Mexico. The first hurricane the Gulf threw at Galveston was in 1900. In terms of lives lost, it was the most destructive hurricane in US history with over 8000 souls lost. The city was rebuilt by raising it and building a greater seawall. The seawall, though, was no match for Ike which hit in 2008.   It was so destructive the n...
