Sorry Kids - 330

This a letter of apology to our kids. I am a 73-year-old climate activist who has had a charmed life by being educated by public funds, privileged to serve in the armed forces, and blessed to see much of the world by helicopter.

In my living room is a library of over 600 science magazines. I have hung onto only the ones with climate articles. All of them tell us climate change is a threat to your happiness and well-being. But, they also tell us climate change is solvable if we act. 

With ten years of diligent study with all the world’s best science organizations in agreement, I should have been posting on social media. I have not. I apologize since your future is a stake.

Social media is not my kind of place but, as my Dad would tell me when there was something we had to do I did not like, “Son, sometimes there are things you do not like.”

I’ll be back on social media but for now, just know the only major climate legislation ever passed was done by the Democrats and it is called the Inflation Reduction Act. Your future depends on this act being protected.

So, if your parents or adults in your life get them up off the sofa to vote Democratic., Show your support by taking them to their polling place.

Becoming Wise Gardeners

Often, when we talk about saving the earth’s climate we talk about the number one problem, the need to switch energy sources from polluting and archaic fossil fuels to modern clean energy sources. More so, I enjoy reading and learning about the second simultaneous step we need to take to save the climate. Some of the Carbon Dioxide must be removed from the air and stored. Scientists use the terms Carbon Capture and Sequestration (CCS), or Carbon Capture and Utilization (CCU) to describe this. When carbon is captured it must be used or safely put somewhere. Today it is pumped back into the earth into old mines or oil fields. These mines and oil fields are called “sinks”. Mother Nature has a lot of natural sinks. For instance, I am sitting in my favorite rocking chair listening to music. My chair and my speakers are made of wood. How Well Off Are You? A friend recently asked me if I was better off today than four years ago. That got me thinking: Am I better off than four years ago?  How do you measure how "well off" you are? This is rather personal, and I invite you to do a little self-analysis. My "well-off meter" fluctuates primarily with how well I conduct my life but is affected by the successes and failures of the climate movement. With the rise of extreme weather, you may have guessed correctly that my emotional state is sometimes challenged.
